You know how “Hot Tub Time Machine” was born? Co-writer Josh Heald was in producer Matt Moore’s office one day, and Moore suggested they remake the 1984 skis-and-skin junker “Hot Dog … the Movie.” Heald misheard him; he thought he said “tub,” not “dog.”
It sags in the middle (don’t we all) and Chevy Chase is sort of a drag, overselling undercooked material as the magical George Carlin-y “repair man.” But with Cusack, the drolly deadpan Robinson and the equally dry Clark Duke (who plays the Cusack character’s nephew, encountering his future mother back in ’86), even the derivative material gets a fair shake. Many will no doubt hate it. It’s cruder than ” The Hangover.” It’s also twice as clever.

Better Than It Sounds. ReallyHot Tub Time Machine really earns its stripes by getting inside its characters’ heads. Their smart-aleck banter and faux-serious dilemmas benefit immeasurably from the very funny actors, topped by Cusack who can deliver this kind of material in his sleep. But beyond that, the scenario also grants the children of the 80s a quiet bit of nostalgia: a lamentation of lost youth and a chance to reflect on the realities of growing older. It takes a surprising bit of grace to handle that amid the fart jokes and ski-based pratfalls, but Hot Tub Time Machine makes it look very easy.

The three leads couldn’t have been cast any better, and they all look like they had a blast making the movie. It’s been years since Cusack has starred in a full-blown comedy, and after seeing him in this, I hope he continues the trend. Robinson is probably best known as Darryl the warehouse worker on “The Office,” and he makes the most out of the opportunity to be a lead player…
…and while I’m no prude when it comes to using colorful language, the f-bomb is used so often as an adjective/adverb, I began to wonder if the screenwriters knew any other modifiers. But as a fun, vulgar, and preposterous comedy that never takes itself too seriously, “Hot Tub Time Machine” is a great time. And you certainly can’t accuse it of misleading advertising.
